BROWS

Hairstrokes: The most common and well known term for the hair strokes effect is “microblading”. Microblading specifically refers to a manual technique that uses a grouping of needles to open the skin in a way that creates hair like lines where ink is then deposited. Clients who are young with dry healthy skin, moderate to a lot of brow hair and no skin issues, can benefit from just microblading alone, however, due to it’s invasive nature, high risk of trauma and small pool of clients where this technique is suitable, I no longer offer the microblading technique as an option. Alternatively, I offer Nano/Hyper-realism brows. This technique also creates a hair stroke appearance, however, a tattoo machine is used instead of a manual tool. While the placement of each hair stroke and overall aesthetic is similar to that of microblading, the lines are somewhat thicker allowing for a fuller looking brow with a smaller amount of hair strokes. This technique is suitable for all ages and skin types while also being more gentle with little risk of creating trauma and/or scar tissue.

It is common that after multiple refresh appointments of microblading that I will switch a client to a powder brow because as the hairstrokes fade and definition is lost, they appear “powdery” anyway or suggest removal/lightening so that we may begin again.

Powder Brow: Clients with oily skin, large pores, reduced skin elasticity/health, coarsely textured hair or with little to no brow hair, have Fitz 6 skin or who are mature may benefit more from a machine shaded brow. This technique is more gentle than microblading and involves gradually layering pigment into the skin with a machine and tiny needle. Some people can feel nervous at the idea of a shaded eyebrow and feel that it appears too unnatural or painted on, however, just like microblading, powder brows can also be customized and have soft feathery edges.

Our skin health plays a huge role in which technique will give us the best possible outcome. As we age, the collagen in our skin breaks down. Tanning, sun exposure, smoking and other environmental factors also contribute to collagen loss in our skin. It is important to take these aspects into consideration when deciding to pursue a cosmetic tattoo procedure and which technique is most suitable for your skin.
